In 1893 Karl Kässbohrer started his own horse buggy repair business in Ulm, Germany.
In 1900 Karl took the risk of making new horse buggys to stock. In 1907 he moved from workshop
to factory methods of production and made the first automobile body. In 1911 the first bus
left the Kässbohrer factory.

After World War II the German economy was in disarray. Karl Kässbohrer's sons Karl and Otto
had a hard time finding truck frames for their buses. In 1951 Otto invented the frameless bus.
A web of lightweight welded steel tubes replaced the truck frame. The instantly successful product
was called SETRA, an abbreviation for the German equivalent of self-supporting.

In 1995 the Setra bus brand was sold to Mercedes-Benz AG. In 2001 Setra introduced the new
TopClass. The model S 417 is now available in the United States.
